Trop Guy Was anyone on the Carnival Cruise Ship "Spirit" last week?? (3/8 thru 3/16). I saw a lot of BJ players. The tables were packed but few players had much experience. I had my first tournament experience. Does anyone have any pointers on this. The way they played it was just a "fun" $20.00 buy-in. You then get $1,000.00 in tournament chips. You play 7 hands and try to get the most money using your $1,000.00 in those 7 hands. After 3 hours of people playing, the top 7 people with the most money advance to the final round of 7 players. The top money winner after 7 more hands is the winner. Very interesting. If anyone has any tournament experience please comment as I may play in another one in the near future. 2003-03-19 05:17:20
pshea sld007 - I works out in my favor 75% of the time. I like the option, and am surprised that I don't see more players do it. 2003-03-18 18:52:48
sld007 pshea - Surrender is a personal decision to lose half the hand as a strategic move to avoid losing all the hand. However, it's just one hand, so what you might do is see if you would have won or lost the hand if you continued and treat it that way. Unfortunately, I am not confronted with this decision since the casinos where I play do not offer this option. 2003-03-18 14:31:02
sld007 london player - I usually play one hand but have ramped up to two hands just to change things up in a bad shoe where I don't want to quit after 4 losses. The simulator is not an accurate reflection of a real game because in a real game there are not that many "decision" hands in my opinion. What do I mean? Well in the difficult mode, out of 20 possible hands, only 5 are no-brainers. Normally, 5 out of 20 are what I call decision hands. So, It is not fair to Dahl's method that you have so many hands in which you might make the difficult basic strategy decision but still lose, since the purpose of the simulator is not to win $ but to test one's mettle, so to speak, insofar as basic strategy is concerned. 2003-03-18 14:27:58
pshea Dahl's method makes sense, I will try it on my next trip. If I surrender a hand, do I count that as a loss and go back to betting one unit? 2003-03-18 10:56:59
london player sld007;when you play,do you play multiple hands or just one hand, because i have tried the dahl method on hitorstand's simulator and i lost every time. 2003-03-18 09:21:10
sld007 Dahl's method does bear fruit. I have used it for 4 years now and can say that I walk out of the casino with more money then I came in with about 2/3 of the time. Now, I am talking about samll gains here--$500 - $750 most of the time, but also small losses most of the time. Ans since my play time is well over the minimum I get complete RFB--so it's essentially a free trip. About 50% of the time it goes win, loss, win, loss, about 25% you lose at least 3 in a row and about 25% you win at least 3 in a row-so mathematically if you increase only in a win streak (such as it is) at the end of the day you will be ahead--if only a little. 2003-03-17 15:36:49
Midnite pshea- There are both winning and losing streaks in BJ. What Dahl trys to do is minimize the losing streaks and capitalize on the winning streaks. 2003-03-16 21:10:16
pshea What exactly is the theory behind Dahls method? Does it have to do with assuming that wins and losses come in streaks? 2003-03-16 18:50:38
shredder On paper I tried 3 ways, one straight $10 proggression, one the $5 drop back, then $10 on the second win, and finnally, straight $10 bets. I've played sinmulated games on the web where I've done pretty good when I've only won 44% or so (with the Dahl proggresion)of the hands. I was surprised at my simulation comparing the 3 methods. and was wondering if anyone else out there experienced simular results. Better to find out now than for real. As I said I'm a newbe, and don't count cards yet, at this point it's too confusing. so I thought the Dahl proggression was a good method, now I wondering if it really holds up to the test. 2003-03-16 06:26:15
Midnite shredder-after a loss, you drop back to a flat $10 bet, until you win two in a row. Then make a $15-$15-etc. No matter what you last bet was, once you lose a hand, the next bet is $10. (for the $10 method) 2003-03-16 06:10:07
shredder I'm just a newbe at bj, and have read Dahl's book. It seems to make sence, but after putting down ( just witten out on paper)over 600 wins and losses in a random fashion with 14 more wins than losses, and useing a $10 progression I lost$85. Substituting a $5 for the first play after a loss then continuing on a $10 proggression it came to -$5. And even up betting ($10)came to $140 in the good. Have I missed something? I kept to 25% one or two wins and losses and 25% wins or losses of 3 or more.(up to 6 in a row) And on the paper there was no accounting for doubles. Has anyone done something simular?Anyone have some thoughts on this to share? 2003-03-16 05:31:40
sld007 jpk and michigan dave - Her are my responses to your questions. Regarding pushes, you stay where you are as if nothing happened. As far as splits go, that is two wins so go up two. I keep going up until I bet 150 twice, then I go back to 50. jpk- no i start at 50, not 25, so i go 50, 50, 75, 75, 100, 100, 150 150. The math equation is x,x,11/2x, 11/2x, 2x, 2x, 3x, 3x-with x equal to 50, but you can make x anything you want. Now, there is nothing wrong with stopping at the first 150, if you like. The theory here is preservation of capital. After all, you won't get many 5,6, or 7 wins in a row in a night so you've got to take the house down when you can because they will be taking you in the long run on most nights, even if you flat bet. 2003-03-15 20:56:21
Midnite jpk- I have read the same thing and while I am no expert, it seemed backwards to me. Doubling an 11 into the dealers Ace, is a gray area. Some say do and some say don't. I don't, as the dealer will only break about 20 % of the time, when he has an Ace up. 2003-03-15 16:31:24
jpk This is to midnite and all the regulars who e-mail this message board.I need your opinions.I read a strategy which suggests to DD with an eleven against a dealers ace,if the dealers can hit soft 17's.If the dealers must stand on all 17's,then you woul'nt DD against the dealers ace. What's the logic behind this?jpk 2003-03-15 15:25:33
jpk sld007,I went through your modified dahl sys.My question is why isnt your progression go 50 50 75 75 100 100 125 125.Am I correct in assuming you are betting 2units of25$ twice,then three units twice,then four units twice?If I understand correctly,then the next bet would be 5units,or 125,instead of 150 ,which i see on your example.Please straighten me out.Thanks JPK 2003-03-15 09:18:58
Michigan Dave sld007-I have been practicing with your progression and I have a couple of questions. What is the strategy on pusshes and splits? Do splits matter in your progession if you win both? Do you ignore a push? Also, when you are at the 6th point (second 100) in your system and DD and win. Do you start over? Thanks. 2003-03-15 07:12:11
