Doc that make you money, ie that win more often than lose these are examples: 2,2 or 3, 3 against dealer 5,6; 7,7 against a dealer 6: 8,8 against 3-7 etc, but if you try to split selectively you will hurt yourself in the long run so split everything basic strategy tells you to, besides splitting even if its one of the 'defensive' splits makes the game alot funner 2003-07-11 11:35:29
McFlaherty Thanks to both Grifter and Midnite for the feedback. I'll definetly stick to the hi-low. Thanks again for the advice!! If I have some more question about counting I'll definetly throw them your way. 2003-07-11 11:31:11
Doc Spec, splits are basicly devided into those that are 'defensive' in nature like the 7,7 and the 8,8. Both not spliting and spliting these hands will leave you a losing hand more often than not, you split these because the math says in the long run you will lose less by spliting after getting these hands over and over as your blackjack play extends over time. If you want to know the splits 2003-07-11 11:29:32
Mr. Ed The best split is AAv6. Expect to win $0.67 on an original $1 bet.....And just to be clear, basic strategy tables are not "suggestions" - they show the best choice for every situation and unless you are counting, should never be deviated from. (Actually if you are counting there are specific changes that you should never deviate from.) Good luck and thanks for joining this board. 2003-07-11 11:24:27
dd deluxe Specs: also, practice using the trainer here until you go crosseyed and you'll go bravely to the casino, your memory seared with the correct moves. 2003-07-11 11:12:34
deer dog deluxe Specs: until you can count cards, the table represents the times you _should_ split. Don't deviate. Also, until you count cards, insurance bets are a waste of your money. 2003-07-11 11:10:14
Specs Thanks. i looked over the tables and they are helpful. the show when are good times to split, but i was wondering when are the BEST times to split. also any advice on buying insurance? 2003-07-11 10:59:38
Grifter Specs - Welcome, and no apologies necessary here. The optimal time for splitting is defined in Basic Strategy tables. Click on "Rules & Strategy" above...There are good tables there. Then post with any specific questions. Someone will jump in and explain. I could answer your question here, but I think you would be better off seeing the tables first. 2003-07-11 10:25:26
Specs sorry guys, im a bit new at this. and didnt wanna look threw all the treads for this question. but it was just wondering when the optimal time for splitting is. thanks 2003-07-11 09:59:31
Mr. Ed Bughousemaster, To clarify: With a 6 showing, the dealer has approximately a 10% chance of getting an 18, 10% chance of getting 19, 10% for 20, 10% for 21. 17% for 17. To be precise, I modeled these numbers assuming an infinite deck (i.e. with replacement) It's certainly close enough for six decks. I'm not sure about 1 deck.......Don't you get dirty looks doubling your A8? I'm surprised you have a hard time standing on A8......What is AIM?...You really should go to bjmath.com. Cacarulo has done excellent work compiling EV (expected value) tables for several different rule/number of deck variations. He compares hit/stand/double/split for every 3 card combination. You would have a blast poring over those figures. (be careful with dealer 10 and Ace up - his figures are AFTER the dealer checks his hole card. You need to make an adjustment to get the "before checking hole card" figures (these are close approximations): with 10 A(12/13)-1/13. with A: A(9/13)-4/13), where A is the after checking hole card figure. I'm not answering your soft doubling questions until you go there and see for yourself. .......Good luck! 2003-07-11 06:00:04
Mr. Ed My first BJ book was "Take the Money and Run" by Henry Tamburin. I bought it because it was the cheapest book in the bookstore that described counting. After reading it, I found it to be an excellent resource. I also have BJA (Blackjack Attack) by Don Schlesinger. I love numbers, but this book was too much for me! I consider it a reference book rather than something to curl up with on a rainy day. I also have "The Counter" by Kevin Blackwood. It's fun fiction, but accurate with regards to blackjack. After reading it, I think I'll stick to insurance and leave BJ as a hobby. 2003-07-11 05:41:00
Grifter McFlaherty - I agree. Stay with the Hi-Lo, or any good Level 1 method. To answer your other question, that was "APC", not "UPC" that I mentioned. Stands for Ken Uston's Advanced Point Count, a Level 3 Method. I tried it in the mid-eighties and IMHO it is an excellent method, but very difficult to use in real play. 2003-07-11 04:57:29
Midnite McFlaherty- I think it would Very hard for you to change now. If you try to use Wong's and make Any mistakes, you are better off with the Hi-Low and not making mistakes. 2003-07-11 00:00:48
McFlaherty Midnite - Wong's system seems to be fairly complicated. Is there much of an advantage in using this system over the using hi-low system? My greatest concern is that I may not be able to keep an accurate count in the casino environment. 2003-07-10 20:48:28
BuGhOu§eMASTER BTW, someone mind answering my last 2 posts? Thanks! 2003-07-10 19:36:03
Midnite McFlaherty- Wong's Halves 2=+1 / 3=+2 / 4=+2 / 5=+3 / 6=+2 / 7=+1 / 8=0 / 9= -1 / 10= -2 / A= -2. BC = Betting Correlation UPC= Uston Plus Count (?) IC= Insurance Correlation PI= (?)
