Ace Spent the day at the new Borgata in AC yesterday. Very nice place, but they still have a lot of kinks to work out. Won some $$$ playing BJ, plus got a meal comp from the pit boss for myself & friend. Had a surprisingly good time! 2003-07-09 08:30:18
itonater When you're counting cards, you're not having fun. And regardless to all of the books that tell you you're there just to win money, I wouldn't play at all if it wasn't a enjoyable experience. A table full of zombie players and a deathly depressing dealer is a table to avoid. 2003-07-09 07:47:23
itonater It's a plague, bjCanada! I've talked to the dealers about these infernal machines and even THEY don't like them. It's all about the casino trying to get more hands in per hour. I can only wonder what's REALLY going on in that big black box... 2003-07-09 07:42:03
Phil G. Thanks for the info. Mr Ed - I do not know what his spread was but he did have a larger bet out at the time. I was flat betting but when I saw him push out a larger bet, I would up my bet slightly. 2003-07-09 06:38:36
Mondellos hippie chick What a grind, Mondello does have an ace in the hole. 2003-07-09 05:32:37
Grifter Ronnie Ron..Wong's Halves is a good system, but Kenny Uston's APC is considered stronger. The BC is slightly lower but both the PE and IC are higher. 2003-07-09 04:17:38
Midnite Ronnie Ron- The answer to both of your questions is, it depends on who you ask. Probably the best counting system is Wong's Halfs. But it is harder to learn. Desert Dog is right and many counters use High-Low. There are also some with colorful names, like Red Sevens, Green Fountain and Silver Fox. There are pro's and con's to both progression betting and card counting. You just have to find out which is best for you. Some people pick up counting very fast. With some, it takes longer and some can never do it. Most players don't even know basic strategy. Some "think" they do, but the soft hands, soft doubles and when to split, trips them up. 2003-07-08 23:36:09
Desert Dog I knew the Canadians would find each other. Ronnie Ron -- if your brain has the right kind of wiring, and mine doesn't, counting is better but way harder. The most common I know of is "high-low", every card between 2-6 that's played counts as +1, every 10 value or Ace that's played counts as -1, divide this running count by your estimate of the number of decks still in the shoe to get true count, and increase bet if true count is positive, meaning remaining shoe is rich in 10's; these favor the player. And do this without appearing like you're concentrating intently. 2003-07-08 21:53:23
bjcanada hey,itonater....beautiful b.c. here... and the dreaded csm 's are here too!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2003-07-08 21:25:06
ronnie ron Also, what is better a progression system or counting? 2003-07-08 21:24:26
ronnie ron What is the best counting system out there? 2003-07-08 21:16:47
mondello I'm still grinding it away behind the bandstand, Mondello is a happy man, but my "unit" seems to be going down. 2003-07-08 20:42:58
Midnite Like Grifter I don't offer unsolicited advice to other players. I have to tell you my helping other players story (one of them). I am at third base, next to me is a little old man. There were two other players. He had 7-4 and the dealer had a paint.(face card) He said "I sould double, right" ? I said, "I wouldn't this time. It isn't the right time for a DD". So he hit and got a 2. He looked at he and said "Do I hit it". I said "yes, the dealer should be pat". He hit it again and drew an 8, for 21. I had a new friend.(and yes the dealer was pat) Now my insurane bets were also clicking. So much so, that when the dealer turned up an Ace, I looked and All of the other players had there hands on their chips waiting to see if I took insurance. If I did they All did. Well to make a short story long. I hit my win goal and told the dealer to color me up. The Little old man said "You arn't leaving are you"? I said "yep, I better take a break" Then both him and the guy on first base offered me money to stay and play. Now, that don't happen very often..... 2003-07-08 14:47:42
Mr. Ed Phil G., was your friend betting a lot when he gave you the about not hitting 12v2? The index for that deviation is +4, which requires a very large bet. 2003-07-08 13:45:51
Grifter Phil, et al.....I'm back. If the guy was giving you advice on not hitting against a dealer's deuce, yes there is a strong possibility he was counting, and of course he was trying to help himself AND you. Personally, I never give advice unless asked. 2003-07-08 13:30:38
BJ Jedi Phil- We all love to beat the house, and most would like to help others beat the house too. I'm usually careful with telling other people whether or not to hit, stand, etc. - 2 things to be aware of- 1) if your new freind was counting, he may give himself away to the floor that he is counting especially if he was already "spreading his bets like I believe a counter would." and his suggestions were contrary to BS. and 2) you may give advice that went wrong to a looney/drunk who would try to hold you responsible and make a scene or pull some crap you just don't need at the moment. 2003-07-08 13:22:52
Phil G. Midnite or any experienced AP. I was playing BJ at a local casino this weekend, I play BS and do not count cards. I struck up a conversation with a player at the table who was spreading his bets like I believe a counter would. I never asked for his help but every once in a while he would give me advice contrary to BS, for example not to hit a 2 when the dealer had a 2 up. It turns out that his advice was right more than it was wrong. My question is, would you ever give advice contrary to BS to someone at the table you had been talking with for awhile? I do not know if he was counting but he seemed to be a very knowledgable player. We were the only ones at the table and I was about even but I kept losing hands that I should have won, he may have felt sorry for me. 2003-07-08 13:03:13
